An Elegy about A Lamp
(Written on Sunday the 24th, A Week has passed since the nuns found Fr Thomas’ mortal remains on the highway.)
Did his mother sleep last night? Could his brothers and sisters take their mind off their beloved ‘Kunjumon’ last night?

It was not midnight yet, the door was open and there was light in the room.
A meteor lighted the village road.
Hyenas waited for their turn when the wolves gathered from corners.
Soon wind from all corners pressed against the walls with whistling sound.
Walls echoed the trembling thunder; drops of rain fell on the soil.
Wolves howled loudly while the hyenas’ teeth shone in the lightning.
A cracking sound, the stone at the corner made way for a gush of blood and water.
The door was still open and the lamp still lighted the hall within.

Windows and doors broke with creaky noise;
A slate on the roof, guarding the lamp from drenching, also burst;
‘Where can I take refuge’ the light said; nowhere was a roof nearby.
Then came the fatal blow; the mast from which light was hanging was felled.
Oil and blood soaked the soil; walls reached the ground and reunited with the soil.
Darkness could not see light any more;
Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? – My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?

By then it was midnight; the house on the hill top soon bathed in light.
Father took the best robe and put it on him.
A ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
His radiance united with the light.

Human foot steps still remained on the ground soaked in blood!
